Ellie Midwood continues her thrilling The Girl From Berlin trilogy with War Criminal’s Widow. As the Nazi regime is struggling to prolong its grip in Europe, the story of Annalise, her husband Heinrich, and her lover, Dr. Ernst Kaltenbrunner, the Chief of the Reich Main Security Office, continues. Annalise and Heinrich are German, working as counterintelligence agents for the American OSS office within the enemy organization. The Third Reich, while often viewed as a formidable organization where all members embraced one goal, is portrayed in a different light in this book. The personal misgivings and individual goals of the officers of the Third Reich lend to an understanding that even such a malevolent force is comprised of conflicted individuals, sometimes doubting its own organization’s goals. Finally, the war is over, Annalise and Heinrich’s last days in their native homeland are harrowing, while an escape is planned by the appreciative American OSS office.
Learning more about the inner workings of the Nazi regime within the triangular relationship of three main characters is certainly an engaging and intriguing process. The Girl From Berlin War Criminal’s Widow by Ellie Midwood is a suspense-filled, page-turning historical novel with many twists and turns. Ms. Midwood is able to develop complex characters and shows that few people are all-good, or all-evil, especially when living in unusual circumstances. However, when the war ends, the consequences of previous actions remain. This is a thought-provoking novel about a very difficult time in the last century. It is not always an easy read, but it will certainly give the reader much to contemplate.

This is a page-turning, gripping account of what people in these types of situations are: neither all devil, just as the winners in war aren’t pure saint. Neither of the the opposing men, husband, and lover of Annalise are shown as a hero. That’s how life is. This story's merit is that it was never about showing a perfect world, a perfect love, in shows the truth of human nature and how we can be corrupted by love ann hatred. This is great story telling.
This novel left me thinking, not of the retribution still owed to Ernst, but of his son. Ernst junior. He is a child of a Jew and of one who contributed to the destruction of many Jews. What will the world hold for his future? Will he grow up obsessed by bigotry and hatred as his father did, love unwisely as does his mother, or is there a future that includes humanitarian attitudes ahead for him?
The concept for this series was brilliant, and the writing brought it to life. You cannot read this story without feeling emotion and being left affected by the story. A deserved five stars.

In Book Three, Ellie Midwood continues the story of Annalise, a German Jew during the closing months of the war and the aftermath. The story is the struggle to live while all around is destroyed.
There is a time, when war ceases to be a conflict between governments, nations and armies, and becomes the stories of individuals and families trying to survive. People, regardless of nationality who are forced to live in ruined buildings without water, power and most precious, food. This is the world of Annalise, who is still trying to serve two masters and fights to the end for possession of Berlin as a German citizen, while trying to save as many of her fellow Jews as possible from the death camps.
It continues as she is allowed to immigrate to the United States where she must endure the trial of the man she loves, who is charged as a war criminal. As the rest of the world moves past the war, she is forced to live it again as she silently prays for his release.
Book three captures the struggles and failed hopes of the survivors of war. It marks the efforts of trying to put one’s life back together and it captures the hope that is instilled in a new generation birthed after the conflict. This is more than just a good ending to the trilogy, it is a fitting ending. It left me with a hope that maybe we, as humans, can get it done better the next time around.
In reading the final book of this trilogy first, I did not have the full story building from the ground floor. That being confessed, readers can surmise what led them to this point as the final story unfolds. Using some rehearsal of previous facts per characters throughout, Ellie Milwood keeps the reader connected to the whole preceding story. Each unpredictable turn of events keeps readers engaged hungering for more. War is hell. It is heinious, hurtful, and deceptive. Deception is the handle on all tools of both enemies and liberators. Innocents suffer and sacrifice their lives & families. Do the ends always justify the means? These questions and more keep Readers' minds & motives challenged throughout this novel. Can human goodness exist in evil system? Can love see truth amidst deception? How many times can true love forgive? How much more evil can humanity be toward one another? Get ready for an unpredictable mental and emotional roller coaster read in Ellie Milwood's. "The Girl From Berlin" final book in this series.
I was reading The Girl From Berlin books after I’ve read The Austrian and truly did not regret this transition back in time. It was like a wonderful flashback about the characters already familiar and (some of them) admired. Like with all her books, Ellie Midwood describes the innermost thoughts and feelings of the main protagonists who are forced to make choices with potentially painful consequences in order to survive in the Nazi society and the war time. They are not ordinary characters and their love to each other is distorted by the dire circumstances. Their story is so engrossing and, at times, disturbing and so “all can happen in life”.
Brilliantly conveying the darkness and horrors of the time, the author evokes a gamut of emotions, which is what books are supposed to do.
A fast read that grabbed me from the very beginning and till I “e-turned” the last page.
